When it comes to customising a product, like apparels, there is a myriad of options available for the people. With each of the customisation service having its own distinctive feature and application, it is sometimes hard for the people to select the right one.
One of these many customisation services is Screen Printing, which is also known as Silk Screen Printing. Screen Printing is a printing technique that has its application dating back to the very old of days. The first recognizable form of this technique appeared somewhere around the 10th and 13th century, in Asia.
Though Screen Printing was highly popular in the Asian regions, it was only in the 18th century that it was largely introduced in Europe. But it failed to make a mark in Europe at first because silk mesh wasn’t readily available. It was only till the easy supply of silk mesh became available and a more profitable outlet for the medium discovered that screen printing was popular in Europe. Now, this is one of the most widely used of customisation methods.
The quality of screen printing lies in the fact that it can be used to print or customise any product. The process of screen printing is rather simple. With this technique, the substrate is printed using ink that is transferred from a mesh. The mesh would be of polyester or any other fine mesh. The open mesh apertures would be filled with ink by using a squeegee or with a fill blade. The areas that need to appear blank would be made impermeable to the ink by a blocking stencil.
When the screen is filled with ink, a reverse stroke is made with the squeegee and it causes the screen to momentarily touch along the line of contact. This wets the substrate with the ink and through capillary action, the ink is pulled out of the mesh apertures as the screen springs back after the blade has passed.
As mentioned earlier, Screen Printing is a versatile technique with plenty of applications possible. One of the most popular applications of this technique can be found in fabrics. This technique can be used on various fabric types that include silk, polyester, cotton and many more.
The major highlight of Screen Printing is that it supports multicolour. For screen printing, only one colour can be used on a screen and in order to use multicolour, quite a few numbers of screens must be used. Because of this, the printing technique can easily cater to bulk orders and it actually performs best with bulk amounts of products.
